Transforming The City Streets
Chicago is undertaking one of the largest street lighting modernization programs in the country. The city, alongside Lyons View Manufacturing, is providing and installing better quality, more reliable outdoor lighting through LED fixtures on streets, alleys, and viaducts – increasing safety, reducing energy costs, and improving the environment.
The ambitious city-wide initiative will replace over 270,000 existing outdated high-pressure sodium light fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights, creating a modern lighting management system to streamline maintenance and repairs. To date, over 100,000 lights have been manufactured and installed. LED lights last 2 to 3 times as longer as the older high-pressure sodium lights, about 10-15 years per light. The goal is to replace 270,000 light fixtures over a 4 year period.
In order to create a successful Smart Lighting System, the program will be installing wireless lighting management that provides real-time outage updates, which will reduce outage response times. It should be noted that the program will not replace all of the city’s existing light poles; however, targeted repairs for poles and wires may be needed to extend the pole’s life and reducing failure rates.
